YEP AGROFOOD POSITION AgriProFocus – Young Expert Business Development, East Africa (Kenya or Rwanda)

Introduction

Background:

AgriProFocus is an international multi-stakeholder network consisting of farmer organisations, private sector enterprises, government, knowledge institutions and civil society organisations, working together to create collective impact and transform agri-food systems. All members actively work with and for farmer entrepreneurs, who are change makers in agricultural transformation. The AgriProFocus network has strong Dutch roots and is active in 13 countries in Africa and South-East Asia, linking 22.000 agribusiness professionals worldwide.

The AgriProFocus network members collaborate to strengthen the position of farmers and other agri-entrepreneurs in agricultural value chains. Entrepreneurs, small and medium scale, who are market-oriented, business-driven and willing to learn, innovate and grow. Agripreneurs who together can, and will, make the difference for sustainable food and nutrition security at national, regional and international level.

Organization

In its new strategy (2018 - 2022) the AgriProFocus Network focuses on making agribusiness work for development by further building a network of multiple stakeholders. With and for them the network will develop and facilitate linking, learning and leadership opportunities around 4 themes: inclusive agribusiness, circular economy, climate change, and nutrition.

Since 2009, AgriProFocus has developed a strong network in East Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi) to support national and Dutch stakeholders with joint activities around youth in agriculture, access to finance, agribusiness development, business development services, a.o. and with a focus on specific value chains: dairy, horticulture, meat. Examples of network events organised with and for members and where they meet, exchange information, share experiences or lobby and advocate for improved opportunities in the agri-food sector are business boosters such as annual finance fairs, transformation labs (debating youth in agribusiness), and issue explorers where stakeholders learn around key topics such as climate smart or nutrition sensitive agri business

The AgriProFocus network approach includes dedicated coordination and connection with Dutch and East African partners as well as a close working relationship with the Netherlands Embassies in the region.

Function

Position:

The Young Expert will focus on business development in East Africa with a focus on services and products in regional projects and programmes. AgriProFocus’ thematic orientation in the agri-food sector is focussed towards

1.inclusive agribusiness, making sure young people and women have equal opportunities in everything our members and partners do;

2.sustainable agribusiness, with the aim to contribute to climate smart agri-food systems;

3.circulair agribusiness, to minimize losses of (raw) materials and products and sustainably manage waste;

4.Nutrition sensitive agribusiness, to assure that agri-food systems adapt to produce and consume healthy products, accessible and affordable for all.


Tasks and activities Young Expert:

The Young Expert will be based in Kenya or Rwanda and will be part of the AgriProFocus team. He/she will work regionally on business development . We are looking for an innovative, creative person that can turn complex challenges into opportunities for change into meaningful cooperation projects with collective impact. The Young Expert will be responsible for the following tasks and activities related to business development for the AgriProFocus network in East-Africa:

-Identify opportunities for collective impact on the transformation of the agri-food sector in East Africa by linking agribusiness opportunities and development challenges.

-Develop network programs that add value to private sector and development partners (creating shared value).

-Build and maintain relationships with members and partners in the agri-food sector in the East Africa region, to create coalitions for specific network projects and programs; manage a customer-relation model as part of this.

-Scouting funding opportunities for network programs and building relationship with potential funders

-Facilitate and (co-)develop programme proposals for member coalitions to mobilise resources for network activities.

-Participate in data collection and analysis for monitoring, learning and evaluation of network programmes and events as well share and learn with colleagues worldwide.

Requirements

Job requirements of the Young Expert:


-Creative, innovative and with a strong drive to create collective impact

BSc. or MSc. degree in (agri) business, marketing, agricultural economics or similar.

-At least 3 years work experience in the agri-food sector, preferable with a focus on business development in low and middle income countries.

-Knowledge about sustainable value chains including OECD guidelines, certification standards, general CSR practices is an advantage.

-At least 1-2 years experience in Africa.

-Experience with network approaches.

-Excellent communicator, relationship builder, networker and presenter.

-Flexible team worker.

-Fluent in English and French.
